How to Protect Your Home from Unwanted Intruders

Buying a house is the largest investment that most people will make in their lifetimes.  As such, it is imperative that homeowners go above and beyond to protect, maintain and enhance their number one asset.  In addition to performing renovations and other maintenance tasks to protect their investment, it is also imperative for homeowners take preventive steps to safeguard their home from prospective burglars and trespassers.

So are what the best ways to safeguard your home?  Below is a list of seven tips that will help you keep your premises safe.

1)      Always double-check the locks on each door to your home.  This is an obvious one, but the last thing you want is to give unsolicited trespassers easy access into your home.  Plus, in the summertime you may leave your back door/screen door open to allow a breeze to enter, and you may forget to lock both of the doors when it’s time to leave.

2)      Leave a light on at night when you are gone.  That light in the window could be the deterrent that keeps a trespasser away, as it indicates someone is inside the home.

3)      Utilize the local police department.  If you notice strange activities, or you are consistently finding an unfamiliar person or persons patrolling the neighborhood, let the police know.  They can send an extra patrol car through your neighborhood, and if a prospective burglar sees a cop car a couple of times on a street, they may think twice about entering one of the homes.

4)      Consider adding a new member to your family….a dog!  Dogs are great protectors, and their loud barks could alert neighbors or sleeping homeowners that something has gone amiss.

5)      Avoid leaving a spare key outdoors.  We often see characters in movies or television shows leaving a spare key under a flowerpot, or a stone or a welcome mat, and we must mention, that is an imprudent idea!  Instead, leave the key with a family member, and contact them if you are locked out, which shouldn’t be too difficult in the cell phone age.  At worst, the money it would cost to call a locksmith would be significantly less than the money it would cost to replace your valuables if the wrong person ever found that key.

6)      Consider an alarm system and/or a safe.  An alarm system is a great way to protect against potential intruders, while a safe can ensure your most sacred valuables are kept secure, even if an undesirable person enters your home.

7)      Use a professional security service, such as Metroguard.  Our guards specialize in keeping homes safe, and are fully trained to discern a sketchy situation, and can be the eyes on the ground you need while you are at work, traveling or on vacation.
